Is being single on Valentine’s Day really that bad?

Single on Valentine's day

I’ve always thought of Feb 14 as the date when singles are left out, well, that’s what I used to think. I spent every Valentine’s Day feeling like it wasn’t for me, because I’ve never celebrated that day as a girlfriend. I’ve never experienced the sweet treatments. I watched everyone get all loved up, receive gifts, and had no one to receive from, no partner, no secret admirers, just me. I used to feel sad for myself. Then, sometime in 2023, a question popped into my head: Is being single on Valentine’s Day really that bad?

This was followed by a couple more questions: Who says self-love can’t be celebrated? Is the love I give to myself not enough? Do I need anybody to make me feel special on this day? These questions changed my perspective and helped me see the day differently.

Valentine’s Day isn’t the worst day for singles. As amazing as it can be for couples, it can be just as meaningful for single people too. If we don’t give ourselves the love we want, how do we expect anyone else to give it to us or even top it? Being single on Valentine’s Day isn’t pathetic; it’s a chance to show yourself how much love you believe you deserve.

How to celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single lady

Solo date

I know this may sound a little boring at first, but solo dates aren’t as bad as they’re painted to be. Doing things alone can actually be fun. There is something refreshing about having a clear headspace and just being with yourself. You don’t need to compare or check what everyone else is doing; you can buy yourself flowers, write down your thoughts in your journal, take cute pictures or videos, enjoy a cup of coffee at your favorite spot, or explore a new place at your own pace. Solo time lets you recharge, reflect, and even discover new things about yourself.

Plan a movie night

After asking myself those questions in 2023, I decided to do something nice for myself. It was too late for me to make any plans, so I made popcorn, bought myself a bottle of soda, and watched a movie in my room. After that, I had a little karaoke session. I had so much fun, and the best part was writing a letter to myself before going to sleep. I highly recommend doing this, it’s a good way to romanticize your life that day.

Girls night out

Plan a date night with your single friends. You can never go wrong with a girls’ night out. Reach out to your single friends, ask about their plans, and suggest a Galentine’s Day or just a fun date night on Valentine’s Day. Put on your makeup, wear that sexy dress, and go out to laugh, dance, or enjoy a meal together. You could even plan something at home like games, movies, or a mini spa night. The goal is to celebrate friendship, feel confident, and enjoy yourself.
